Cala figuera

Is a relatively quiet and unharmed (by mass tourism) village in the southeast corner of the island, where fishing still is a major part of daily living

SaGranja

An open air museum inside an old mansion and it's garden, showing life on Mallorca 200 years ago, just before it became a popular tourist destination.

ValldeMossa

The small town in the mountains where Mallorcan tourism began one cold, damp winter in 1838.
Valldemossa cannot escape its connection with Frederic Chopin and his lover George Sand. They arrived in 1838, having rented a former monk's cell, planning to carry on their affair away from the gossip of Paris and hoping that the climate would benefit Chopin's health (he had tuberculosis). Nothing worked out as planned. The weather was wet and windy, the couple were shunned by the locals, Chopin's piano failed to arrive and the relationship never recovered. Sand took out her anger on Valldemossa in a spiteful book, Winter in Majorca, which the locals, labelled as thieves and savages, still gleefully sell to visitors.

The Reial Cartoixa (Roya Carthusian Monastery) is the focus of any visit - white-arched corridors lead to 'cells' containing museums on various themes. Visit the old pharmacy - you can almost smell the herbs - then look into the library, where the monks would meet for half an hour a week, their only human contact. Of course there is Chopin's cell...

Port de Sóller

The port, or harbour, of Sóller. It's main attraction is (besides having a beautiful harbour) a tramway connecting it with Sóller since 1920.

Pollença

A nice city in the upper east part of Mallorca. It's main attraction is a 320 steps long stairway going from the main square uphill to a small church.

s'Arenal

s'Arenal and Palma de Mallorca are the main tourist centers of the island. Hotel next to hotel next to restaurant/bar, next to shops along a boulevard more than 5 Km's long. More tourists visit Mallorca each year than the whole of Greece! We were there at the end of October, imagine being there in July/August! Tourism is everywhere, though you can find some quiet spots along the coast and in the interior of the island. We rented a car and drove around the island. These photos are all beach impressions taken in s'Arenal. Lots of older people in this time of the year, mostly from Germany and the Spanish main land...
