Like usual, we went to Greece by car from the end of July to the end of August. First we drove to Ancona in Italy, and there took a ferry to Igoumenitsa, which is just below Albania, Corfu is quite nearby. From Igoumenitsa we first drove to a small village called Lambiri, which is near Egio on the North of the Peloponnesos. We stayed on a camping at the sea for five days there. Then we crossed the Peloponnesos to Gythio, the 'port' to the Mani, a rather eccentric and exotic part of Greece. We stayed there on a camping for 4 days. From Gythio we went to Kythira, an island below the Peloponnesos. You probably never visited it :-). We stayed in a village called Mylopotamos for 3 days, we rented a room there. From Kythira we drove to Evvia (or Evia), to a village called Agios Georgios. Friends live there. We camped for free at the seaside for the rest of this vacation, having a private sandy beach in front of our tent. It never gets any better! Then back to Igoumenitsa and from there back home, on the way stopping at the Meteora, a big tourist attraction. 4 weeks is too short.... nearby. Agios Georgios is a village on the island Evia, near the west point, on the Lichada peninsula. Did you know Evia is the second biggest Greek island, after Crete? Did you know the island exists? Here you can read more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euboea Why do we go there? Several Dutch friends own houses in the nearby village of Lichada, and next to Club Med Gregolimano you can set up your tent on the beach for free... Except for the club Med settlement, not many foreign tourists explore this region of Greece, but as it is only a 2 hour drive from Athens, you can guess many Greek tourists stay there during August, the main Greek summer-vacation month. All the more because since a few years a ferry sails from the opposite mainland, from Aghios Konstantinos. We spent almost 2 weeks there, reading, swimming, things like that... you can read more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euboea Why do we go there? -
-
Maybe Kythira is the most 'unknown' island of all Greek islands. Yet it is fairly large. Kythira is situated below the Peloponnesos, inbetween the Peloponnesos and Creta. At the end of WW2, 15000 people lived there. Only 3500 people live in Kythira these days, cause after WW2, most of them emigrated, many of them to Australia. Nowadays about 60.000 people of Kythira origin live in Australia. Some of them go to their roots... We met many English speaking people there, Australian tourists... They don't forget their roots... The Mani is an eccentric and exotic Greek region. People (families) used to fight each other until rather recently, which is reflected in the way they build their houses: like a fortress with defending towers. Not now anymore of course. A lot of these mansions are restored or being restored as hotels, apartments or guest houses. If you want to know more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mani_Peninsula defending towers. I decided to dedicate a special album to the "life on the pier". The pier was quite near our tent, and my new Canon EF-S 50-250 stabilized zoom lens helped a lot... - photos: 72 (31 MB)
